Summary

The three dimensional shape of the oliva inferior, nucleus conterminalis, and a hitherto unknown nucleus in the corpus restiforme is described. The author applied a new method allowing to stain selectively nuclei of the human brain in thick slices (1000 μ). The sections are studied with the binoculars at low magnifications and can substitute time consuming reconstructions. Besides the distribution of lipofuscin as element of the chemoarchitecture of the brain stem is investigated.

The nucleus principalis is divided into 2, the dorsal accessory oliva into 4, and the medial accessory oliva into 14 areas. The rather complicated shape of the nuclei is interpreted as an expression of functional differences of the various areas. The distributional patterns of different afferent and efferent fibers in the oliva inferior of the cat, as shown by Brodai and his collaborators is hypothetically transferred to a scheme of the subdivisions of the human oliva.
