A reevaluation of the genetic mechanism governing phase variation in Salmonella

  • Published:
Molecular and General Genetics MGG Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

Synthesis of phase-1 antigen is blocked through a repressor produced under the control of a regulator gene situated in the H 2 operon. If the operator gene ah 2 undergoes an operator-negative mutation, the transcription of operon H 2 is inhibited. As a consequence the operator gene ah 1 situated in the H 1 operon becomes derepressed and synthesis of phase-1 antigen occurs.
