Summary
35 male guinea pigs were injected with natural ACTH (Depot-Acethropan®) and 12 male guinea pigs received synthetic β 1–24Corticotropin (Ciba). The increased activity of the adrenal cortex was ascertained by measuring the increase in weight of the adrenal glands, the increase of cell nuclear volume in the zona fasciculata and the augmented release of 17-OHCS in the urine.
Morphological changes to the nerve cells in the nucleus infundibularis and nucleus suprachiasmaticus were regularly to be observed. The cell nuclear volume of the non-pyknotic ganglion cell nuclei of this nuclear area showed an increase. The changes were not confined to the hypothalamus. Damage was discovered further afield in the hippocampus, the griseum periventriculare thalami and the nucleus habenularis medialis. These alterations are independent of the type of ACTH used.
The above-named areas are held to be responsible for controlling the adrenocorticotropic partial function of the adenohypophysis.
