Spontaneous and induced activation of genes affecting the phenotypic expression of glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase in Daphnia pulex

I. Intraclonal variations in the electrophoretic mobility of G6PD

Summary

Clones of Daphnia pulex which reproduce by ameoitic parthenogenesis and live under controlled conditions, are an optimal model for studying variability.

Spontaneous intraclonal variations in the electrophoretic mobility of G6PD (EC 1.1.1.49) were detected in Daphnia pulex. Clones variable and stable for this character were identified. The frequency of occurrence of individuals having the modified variant of G6PD was as high as 1–5×10-1 in the variable clones. Intraclonal selection of Daphnia with the alternative electrophoretic variants of G6PD was efficient, and it resulted in significant differences in their frequencies of occurrence. The causes of the phenomena observed are discussed.
