Summary
The pineal organ of the young turtle, Pseudemys scripta elegans, is studied by histological, histochemical, and cytological methods. The epiphyseal wall of this species contains two cell types: ependymal supportive cells and “pseudosensory cells” which display, simultaneously, photoreceptor structures (inner segment with paraboloid and ellipsoid, rudimentary outer segment and basal process) and the character of glandular cells with a vascular secretory polarity. The posterior epiphyseal wall contains myelinated and unmyelinated nerve fibers and ganglion cells which show typical neurosensory synaptic junctions with the basal process of the “dpseudosensory cells”. The problem of a functional duality is discussed in view of the morphological and cytochemical findings.
