Summary

1. The actions of extracts from uncleaned cotton and from the dust of cardrooms in cotton industry was investigated in animal experiments.

2. It was found that the shreds of seeds and capsules of cotton, besides minor quantities of histamine, contain more effective amounts of a histamine liberating substance, which is not a protein, but whose chemical nature is still unknown.

3. The histamine liberating action of the extract which resembled to the effects of compound 48/80 could be demonstrated mainly in the mast cells of rat peritoneum, in the blood pressure and respiration of cat, in the histamine amount of cat plasma after intravenous injection and in the histamine liberating effect on rabbit blood in vitro.

4. The possible importance of these facts for the understanding of the pathogenesis of the monday-dyspnoe of cardroomworkers is discussed.
