Summary
Using the potassium pyroantimonate method by electron microscopy (Komnick, 1962), localization and transport of sodium ions were investigated in the sweat glands of rat foot pads. Sodium ions were generally detected in the following places:
-
1.
In the secretory portions of the sweat glands inside or outside the plasma membrane composing the basal infoldings, and close to the plasma membranes of the lateral interdigitations between neighboring cells.
-
2.
In the proximal portions of the excretory ducts in the moderately dilated intercellular space between the epithelial cells.
On the basis of these findings secretion and reabsorption of sodium ions in the sweat gland were discussed.
-
1.
