Summary
Light sensitivity was investigated in 18 species of fresh water fish belonging to 16 different families. The fishes were blinded and their reaction to light was tested by determining both spontaneous and conditioned responses (light-food-training).
Illumination of the head elicited definite reactions in every fish. In the eel and lungfish not only the head but also the trunk and tail region were found to be light sensitive.
Light sensitivity in the head is most probably mediated by receptors in the pineal region of the diencephalon. The light sensitive receptors in the trunk and tail areas are most likely located in subdermal tissues and not in the skin. The central nervous system may possibly be involved here too.
The light sensitivity of the head was investigated in detail in a blinded minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus). The action spectrum reaches its maximum at about 530 nm and falls off more steeply at lower frequencies than at higher frequencies. This curve coincides very accurately with the extinction curves of visual pigments belonging to the porphyropsin group with a sensitivity maximum in the same spectral region.
In the blinded minnow the absolute visual threshold for the most efficient test colour (λ max ca. 530 nm) lies in the order of 108 quanta per second per cm2. It is only about 20 times higher than the threshold of unblinded Xenopus laevis and about 103 times higher than the absolute scotopic point of the normal human eye.
