Summary
Bees with their eyes adapted to darkness, to blue-green without ultraviolet, or to daylight, were trained to walk to monochromatic light (checker-board pattern). The wave lengths used were: 356, 378, 399, 410, 417, 449, 471, 481, 504, 519, 531, 545 and 561 nm. The relative threshold values for seeking out the monochromatic colours were determined for all three states of adaptation.
Measurements showed sensitivity maxima in the ultraviolet, in the blue, and in the green, and lead one to conclude to a trichromatic receptor system.
The position of the sensitivity maxima is independent of the state of adaptation. In contrast to vertebrate eyes at the transition from colour vision to black-and-white vision, bees failed to manifest a Purkinje phenomenon, i.e., the shift in peak spectral sensitivity as a function of the state of adaptation.
The highest sensitivity maximum lies in the green (545 nm) for dark-adapted eyes and in the blue (449 nm) for light-adapted eyes. Thus bees can see colour in every state of adaptation, though with varying relative brightness.
