Zusammenfassung
-
1.
Summary
-
1.
On the earthworm Lumbricus terrestris L. have been determined the O2-consumption of the whole animal, the average weight of the different tissues as part of the whole fresh weight, and the respiration of the isolated organs in vitro.
-
2.
The respiration of the living animal at 25° C comes to 119 μ O2/g fresh weight · hr.
-
3.
In four media of different composition neither body wall nor midgut showed significant differences in the rate of respiration.
-
4.
The summated tissue respiration amounts to 116% of the respiration of the living animal.
-
5.
The O2-consumption of all metabolically active tissues at 25° C averages to 0.200 μ O2/mg fresh weight · hr. Significantly higher values were observed for nervous system (0.327) and midgut (0.380).
-
6.
Of both midgut tissues the chloragog had the lower O2-consumption (0.240); the respiration of the midgut epithelium could not be measured directly, but is undoubtedly higher than 0.380.
-
7.
From the relatively high O2-consumption of the midgut tissues is evident, that these tissues have important metabolic functions besides digestion, absorption and accumulation of food substances.
