Summary
-
1.
In Octopus vulgaris the sensory epithelium (macula) of the gravity receptor is vertically oriented when the animal is in its normal position. Both left and right maculae subtend an angle of 90° open to the front; that is, each forms an angle of 45° to the plane of symmetry of the animal (Fig. 2).
-
2.
The compensatory eye movements (counterrolling and vertical displacement) were recorded during rotation of the animals around various axes, mainly around the transverse and longitudinal axes. The reactions of normal animals were compared with those of animals after unilateral and bilateral removal of the statoliths. The influence of increased magnitude of gravito-inertial force (up to 1.8 g) on these reactions was also investigated.
-
3.
In all experiments, in which compensatory eye movements were observed, the curves of the counterrotating tilt directions (forward and backward tilts, left and right tilts respectively) demonstrate a hysteresis effect.
-
4.
During the rotation of a normal animal around its transverse axis the compensatory reaction is a counterrolling of both eyes in the same direction. During rotation around its longitudinal axis there is a vertical displacement of both eyes (one eye is raised and the other is lowered).
-
5.
After unilateral removal of the statolith counterrolling as well as vertical displacement of the eyes occur simultaneously. This is observed during rotation around its transverse axis and also during rotation around its longitudinal axis. However, the amplitude of the eye movements is diminished by about 50%, compared with that of normal animals.
-
6.
After bilateral removal of the statoliths no compensatory eye movements are to be seen.
-
7.
During rotation of normal animals in a 45°-left- or 45°-right-position (i.e. rotation around an axis diagonal to the transverse and longitudinal axes and between them) both eyes show counterrolling. The amplitude of the reaction can be compared with that of a unilaterally operated animal during rotation around its transverse axes (Fig. 11).
-
8.
During the rotation of a unilaterally operated animal around such a diagonal axis, which is parallel to the remaining macula epithelium, no compensatory counterrolling of the eyes can be observed. If, however, the remaining macula epithelium is perpendicular to the rotation axis, the animal shows almost normal counterrolling (Fig. 12).
-
9.
The magnitude of the gravito-inertial force does not influence the compensatory eye movements, either in normal animals or in animals with one statolith removed.
Conclusions from these results
-
10.
The compensatory eye movements depend on the function of the statolith organ of the statocyst sac (cp. point 6 of the summary).
-
11.
The effect of both statolith organs on these reactions is additive (5).
-
12.
One statolith organ affects the counterrolling as well as the vertical displacement of both eyes (5). li]13.|Principle of function. It is concluded from the ultrastructure of the sensory cells of the macula epithelium that also in Octopus shear (that is the force acting tangentially to the epithelium) is the stimulating force for the sensory elements. Both compensatory eye movements alter as a function of the direction of shear of the statolith on the sensory epithelium. They are not affected, however, by the magnitude of shear (5, 8, 9). li]14.|Results and conclusions are discussed with regard to the force stimulating the sensory elements, to the hysteresis phenomenon, to the principle of function and to the cooperation of both statolith organs. Furthermore they are compared with the respective findings in other molluscs, in crabs and in vertebrates.
Zusammenfassung
-
1.
