Summary
The location, structure and function of some thoracic and tegminal sense organs in the field cricket have been investigated.
-
1.
Within the pterothorax inserted at the end of each subalar sclerite, was found a stretch receptor with one multipolar sensory cell and, closely related to it, a chordotonal organ with five scolopidia extending between the tergum and the pleurum. In the male, each forewing bears a sensory pad with sensilla trichoidea on both the upper and lower sides at the end of the file (subcosta).
-
2.
The stretch receptor responds in a phasic-tonic fashion. An upward movement of the wing gives rise to a transient maximum excitation followed by a plateau; a downward movement is associated with an initial silent period of some seconds. During the tonic plateau the impulse frequency depends on the wing position.
-
3.
A method for recording nerve impulses in the free-moving insect is described. In the unrestrained, resting cricket, the stretch receptor fires during the expiratory phase of the breathing movements. In the walking cricket, this receptor is mainly active before the subalar muscle contracts. In the singing male the stretch receptor also discharges before the contraction of the subalar muscle and at a rate of 1–3 spikes/sound-pulse.
-
4.
The chordotonal organ responds to substrate vibrations. Its impulse frequency does not seem to be related to the wing position.
-
5.
Section of the nerves which carry all sensory input from the wing region does not change the rhythm of singing and flying. The position and movements of the tegmina during singing, however, are controlled by sensory organs. Among these the subcostal sensory pads play an important role: As soon as they are lacquered, the male cannot take up the normal singing position of the tegmina and stridulatory movements become soundless.
-
6.
When both subcostal sensory pads are removed the males show no preference for the normal (right over left) wing position.
