Summary
-
1.
In the Megaloptera the ovipositor consists of two genital labia fused medially and enclosing the groove through which the eggs pass. They are formed by the fusion of the gonocoxites and the gonostyli of the 9. segment. The terminal segment of the gonostylus remains in the form of a palpus. Gonapophyses are not present on the 8th and 9th segments. The genital labia are stiffened by a strong “lateral sklerite” which articulates with a process of the tergum.
-
2.
The egg-laying apparatus of the Planipennia is structurally similar to that of the Megaloptera. In general, the egg-laying apparatus in the primitive families of the Planipennia seems to be much less reduced than that of the Megaloptera.
-
3.
In the Raphidioptera the egg-laying apparatus consists of appendages of the 8th and 9th segment. Exactly as in the Megaloptera and in the Planipennia, the main body of the egg-laying tube is formed from the gonocoxites and gonostyli of the 9th segment. The unpaired appendage of the 8th segment forms the bottom of the egg-laying tube. The two elements are connected by a ridge and groove joint (olistheter). In the Raphidioptera too the terminal segment of the gonostylus is preserved. The lateral sklerite is broken up into thin transverse bars dorsal and ventral to a unified narrow longitudinal portion.
-
4.
The unpaired appendage of the 8th segment in the Raphidioptera can obviously have evolved only in conjunction with the main body of the egg-laying tube. It seems impassible that the unpaired appendage could have grown subsequently into the ovipositor of the Neuropteroidean type. This indicates that the unpaired appendage of the 8th segment has been lost secondarily in the Megaloptera and Planipennia.
-
5.
It seems probable that the olistheter in the Raphidioptera constitutes a secondary structure.
-
6.
In the Coleoptera the female genital opening is flanked by the vaginal palps. They consist of the gonostyli and gonocoxites of the 9th segment.
-
7.
Compared to the Coleoptera the Neuropteroidea are more advanced because their gonostyli are fused and they have developed an interior musculature in their ovipositors. It is considered certain that these similarities are indicative of a close phylogenetic relationship. Therefore the theories that the Coleoptera are more closely related to any one subgroup of the Neuropteroidea can be regarded as disproven.
-
8.
The hypothesis is proposed that the ovipositor of the Neuropteroidea has passed through a stage of similarity to vaginal palps in its phylogenetic development.
-
9.
The vaginal pales in the Coleoptera may possibly represent a plesiomorphic form of the Neuropteroidian ovipositor.
-
10.
The facts demonstrated here are best understood if one accepts the assumption that Coleoptera is the sister group of Neuropteroidea.
Zusammenfassung
-
1.
