Summary
The fate of parenterally administered 32P-labeled liver phospholipids in tumor-bearing animals as well as in normal controlled animals was studied. The tumor was the only tissue which showed an increasing incorporation throughout the whole experiment.
Similarly, ascites cells revealed an in vitro uptake that increased as a function of the incubation time.
The comparison with the 32P uptake from 32P-orthoposphate indicates that the radioactivity incorporation in the phospholipid fraction is not due to de novo synthesis of phospholipid molecules. Tumor-bearing animals appear to have a faster excretion of injected 32P-phospholipids and a mobilization from other tissues to the tumor.
The incubation of the 32P-phospholipids with tissue homogenates shows effects on the various components of the phospholipids which are characteristic for each type of tumor.
