A technique for the immediate reconstruction of the lower lip after ablation of tumour

Summary

The method of lower lip reconstruction as developed by the author in an operative series of 64 cases allows a complete and immediate repair after excision of large labial tumours. After resection of the tumour the defect is closed by sliding over the cheek with mucosa.

This procedure has the advantage of:

  1. 1)

    immediate repair

  2. 2)

    greater economy in preserving the orbicular muscle on the labial commissure

  3. 3)

    adequate mucosal coverage

  4. 4)

    the ability to be used for central lesions or lesions near the commissure.

The technique can be extended by an additional mucosal graft from the opposite cheek in cases of commissural tumours and by an additional median Abbélap from the upper lip in cases of total resection of the lower lip.
