Summary

Salmonella typhimurium L+15-11 was shown to have four 30s and six 50s ribosomal protein components which were chromatographically distinguishable from their counterparts of Escherichia coli K-12 JC411E01. A hybrid strain between E. coli K-12 JC411E01 and S. typhimurium L+15-11, having ribosomes of S. typhimurium-type protein composition and being sensitive to phage Plkc was isolated by conjugation between these two species.

Transduction experiments by phage Plkc between the above hybrid strain and E. coli K-12 JC411ES01 showed that characters of all the S. typhimurium-type ribosomal protein components could be cotransduced with the streptomycin or spectinomycin resistance marker, indicating that the genes specifying these ten ribosomal protein components were located in the str region on the chromosome.
