Summary

  1. 1.

The influence of the ferrous ion on smooth muscles of blood vessels and different organs in situ in anesthetized rabbits, cats and dogs has been investigated.

  2. 2.

The following vasoactive drugs: adrenaline, noradrenaline, ephedrine, sympatol, vasopressin, angiotonin, ergotamin, barium chloride, acetylcholine and histamine are antagonized by the intravenous infusion of the ferrous sulphate. Ferrous ion does not inhibit the vascular action of nicotine, lobeline and pentamethonium. The vascular effects of electrical stimulation of the great splanchnic and vagus nerve are not inhibited either.

  3. 3.

The contractions of the uterus (adrenaline), urinary bladder (serotonin) and small intestine (acetylcholine) in rabbits, bronchi (histamine, serotonin) in dogs and nictitating membrane (adrenaline, serotonin) in cats are inhibited by the previous injection of the ferrous sulphate. Ferrous ion does not reduce the contractions of the nictitating membrane produced by electrical stimulation of the cervical sympathetic nerve.

  4. 4.

The explanations of the obtained results are discussed.
