Summary

The effect of pyramidone upon the discharge frequency of muscle spindles was studied in cats decerebrated by intercollicular section and after spinalization Spindle discharge was recorded before and during stretch of the soleus and gastrocnemius muscles.

Spindle activity was increased by pyramidone in the spinalized preparation.

In decerebrate cats the drug not only increased but nearly as often also reduced discharge frequency. Decreased spindle activity was generally accompanied by diminished reflex tension of the muscles and vice versa. In some few cases, however, the changes in spindle activity and muscle tension did not run parallel.

It is suggested that depression of myotatic reflexes caused by pyramidone in the decerebrate cat is not due to an inhibition of the spinal γ-motor system, but results from a supraspinal inhibitory mechanism working upon both α and γ systems.
