Summary
In experiments on guinea-pigs and cats, records were taken of the changes in blood pressure, bronchial volume, and gastric motility, provoked by peripheral vagal stimulation or by injected acetylcholine.
In the guinea-pig, fall in blood pressure and contractions of the stomach on stimulation of the vagi were suppressed by small amounts of ganglionic blocking drugs, whereas even large doses did not affect the bronchoconstriction on vagal stimulation.
In the cat, fall in blood pressure and bronchoconstriction on vagal stimulation were practically abolished by ganglionic blocking agents. The contractions of the stomach, however, were only delayed in their onset, whereas their intensity was not reduced by high doses of hexamethonium and pendiomid.
Cholinesterase inhibitors enhanced, and atropine abolished those effects of vagal stimulation which were insensitive to ganglion blocking drugs. It is concluded that these effects are mediated by cholinergic fibres.
No evidence was obtained that these fibres might synapse in ganglion cells situated in the vagus trunc or in the nodose or jugular ganglion.
The results suggest that at least part of the bronchoconstrictor fibres to the lung of the guinea-pig, and of the motor fibres to the stomach of the cat, reach the effector organs without being interrupted by ganglion cells.
