Summary

The influence of ethylenediamine, ethanolamine, diethylaminoethanol and diethanolamine on the positive inotropic response produced by theophilline on the isolated papillary muscle of the cat was studied.

When no theophylline was added the drugs in doses of 1/2—1 mM/l caused a small increase in contractile force. Theophylline (1/2 mM/l) produced a pronounced and prolonged positive inotropic response. When theophylline and one of the amines were given simultaneously or successively the ffects ot both drugs were additive. There was no reason to assume a potentiating effect of either ethylenediamine, ethanolamine, diethylaminoethanol and diethanolamine.
