Summary
The area of northern Malmö and environs is strongly influenced and changed by man. Seven floristically distinct landscape types are distinguished. 32 plant communities dominated by vascular plants are described, which vary considerably in their distribution, abundance, and physiognomy. The spatial distribution of the plant communities is controlled, to a large extent, by the occurrence of nutrient-rich (pH 6.9–8.5) artificial substrates. Fertility in the urban agglomeration is predominantly controlled by the type of substrate. Of special interest is the disjunct distribution of Hordeum murinum, mainly in the city proper, and H. jubatum on the fillings. Also the genera Epilobium, Poa, and Agrostis display distinct responses to substrate conditions.
The plant communities described could be placed within the Braun-Blanquet system, including seven classes. The Cakiletea maritimae are represented by two communities belonging to the Thero-Suaedion and Atriplicion litoralis respectively, the Bidentetea tripartiti by one Bidention community, the Chenopodietea by one Polygono-Chenopodietalia community and thirteen Sisymbrietalia communities of three alliances: Sisymbrion, Polygono-Coronopion, and Onopordion acanthii. The Plantaginetea majoris are represented by two Lolio-Plantaginon communities and three Agropyro-Rumicion crispi communities, the Artemisietea vulgaris are represented by the orders Convolvuletalia sepium and Artemisietalia vulgaris, which is separated into one Arction community and three Galio-Alliarion communities. The Angelicion litoralis, with two communities recorded, occurs in moister sites. The Phragmitetea include two communities belonging to the Phragmition. The Rhamno-Prunetea contain two communities belonging to Prunetalia spinosae, on excavated soil, and to Sambucetalia, on dross, respectively.
It is concluded that the locally described communities could be easily placed within the Braun-Blanquet system, that the variation in plant communities is remarkable and interpretable in terms of substrate properties, and that many plant communties appear as saturated communities, despite their rapid development.

Additional information
The taxonomic nomenclature mainly follows Lid (1974)(a few genera after Weimarck 1963 and Garcke 1972) for vascular plants, Arnell (1956) and Nyholm (1954–69), bryophytes, and Dahl & Krog (1973), lichens. Syntaxa are principally arranged according to Westhoff & Den Held (1969).
I am much indebted to A. Nicklasson, Växjö, for help with identifying cryptograms; T. Karlsson, Lund, for help with vascular plants; G. Mattiasson, Lund, for his criticism of the tables. The language is revised by W. Meades, St. John's, Canada, with whom I also have had many valuable discussions of the manuscript during my stay at Ecology Section, University of Connecticut, Storrs, Conn. 06268, United.States.
