Effect of sodium chloride and calcium chloride on nitrite induced methemoglobinemia in Clarias lazera

Abstract

The present study is an attempt to evaluate the protective effects of environmental chlorides (as NaCI and CaCl2) on nitrite-induced methemoglobinemia to the fresh water telcost Clarias lazera. Two aspects were investigated, including the determination of the minimum ratio of chloride to nitrite ion required to inhibit nitrite-induced methemoglobinemia, and the ability of chloride to reverse methemoglobin formation in fish previously exposed to nitrite.
