Summary
During the period 1972–1989 conservative surgical treatment was performed in 67 patients with renal cell carcinoma. The indications for conservative surgery were imperative in 42 patients, with a mean age of 62.2 years and a mean tumor diameter of 5.01 cm and elective in 25 patients with a mean age of 50.3 years and a mean tumor diameter of 3.1 cm. The surgical techniques used were polar resection in 21 cases and enucleation in 46. Six patients died of metastatic diffusion, 2 presented with solitary metastases amenable to surgical treatment, and 3 suffered lcoal recurrences. Cumulative survival curves calculated with the Kaplan-Meier method revealed a 5-year probability of survival of 100% for PT1 tumors, 89% for PT2, and 64% for PT3 and PT4 combined, with a mean follow-up of 46.4 months.
