Supernumerary chromosomes in Bandicota indica nemorivaga and a female individual with XX/XO mosaicism

Abstract

Supernumerary chromosomes and an XX/XO mosaic individual of B. i. nemorivaga are described. The supernumeraries are small metacentric chromosomes and are stained all along their length in C-band preparations. They have morphology and staining characteristics similar to those observed in different populations of Rattus rattus. Extensive G-band similarity of the chromosomes of B. i. nemorivaga and R. rattus and the size, shape and staining behaviour of the supernumerary chromosomes in these genera suggest that they have acquired supernumeraries from a common ancestor.
