Analysis of tensile test for a cracked adhesive layer pulled by rigid cylinders

Abstract

The elastostatic axisymmetric problem for an infinite layer is considered. The layer is subjected to tensile forces laterally applied through rigid cylinders which are perfectly bonded to the layer on their flat ends. There is either a penny-shaped crack or an external notch in the mid-plane of the layer. The Hankel transform is used to solve the governing equations which are reduced to a system of three singular integral equations for cylinder-layer interface stresses and crack surface displacement derivative. Interface stresses, stress intensity factors around the edge of the cylinders and at the crack tips, and strain energy release rate for the crack are presented in graphical form.
