The effect of N2-fixing bacterium Pseudomonas putida 23 promoting growth on the yield of red beet plants during 2-year microfield experiments (in pots without bottom under plant conditions) with soils and specially prepared soil mixtures with various N2-fixing activity was examined. Plants were grown with NPK fertilizers. N2-fixing activity was determined by acetylene reduction assay. In a pot experiment, the survival of bacteria in the rhizoplane and rhizosphere of plants were studied using an antibiotic resistant strain of bacterium. Application of the bacterium increased yield under soil conditions with minimum values of N2-fixing activity and with a high survival rate of bacterium. Application of the bacterium was ineffective in soil and mixtures with the maximum values of N2 fixation at a low bacterial survival rate. Maximum yields were obtained when plants were grown on soils and mixtures with maximum values of N2 fixation, where application of bacterium did not lead to increase in the yield. Application of the bacterium in soils and mixtures with minimum values of N2-fixing activity, despite the increase in this index, did not make it possible to increase the yield to a maximum level. Probably, in this case, other indices of soil fertility were the limiting factors in increasing yield. A soil test, the activity of N2 fixation, was proposed to predict the effectiveness of application of N2-fixing bacteria and plant growth promotion under various soil conditions.
