More Efficient Coal Flotation in Salt Solution: Physicochemical Aspects

Abstract

The action of inorganic reagents in coal flotation is analyzed, with a view to improving enrichment. Sulfates of calcium, magnesium, and iron most likely act by diminishing the hydration of coal particles as a result of the surface adsorption of cations. The positive influence of a natural salt solution consisting primarily of NaCl on coal flotation is analyzed: increased frothing in the presence of NaCl electrolyte is due to change in the physicochemical properties of the adsorbed layers, with the formation of heteropolar reagents at the liquid–air interface.
