Hydrogen Era in Domestic Metallurgy: Report 1

  • Published:
Steel in Translation Aims and scope

Abstract

This article considers a large-scale project start-up on the subject of hydrogen metallurgy regarding the future for preliminary assessment of the technical capability, economic feasibility, and competitiveness of steel production from iron oxides using gaseous hydrogen/methane as a reductant in the design of metallurgical enterprises. General figures on CO2 emissions in the world, a brief overview of modern technologies for direct iron reduction, and a description of liquid-phase iron reduction in hydrogen/methane plasma based on foreign scientific and technical publications are presented. A trial technological scheme of the experimental complex and the possibilities of its technological scale-up are outlined.
