Biochemical diversity of fatty acid composition in flax from VIR’s genetic collection and effect of environment on its development

Abstract

Twenty-seven accessions of flax, including 3 low-linolenic (LL) accessions, grown in the Leningrad and Samara regions, are used to evaluate the influence of environmental conditions on the fatty acid composition (FAC) of seeds. Oil FAC was evaluated including: palmitic (PAL), stearic (STE), oleic (OLE), linoleic (ω6, LIO), linolenic (ω3, LIN) acids; ω6/ω3; and the iodine number of oil (IOD). The analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed a significant effect of the genotype and place of reproduction on PAL, OLE, LIN, and IOD. Only the genotype of the accession influenced LIO. For ω6/ω3, the absence of such influence is explained by the considerable divergence from the normal distribution due to the LL-accessions. Among the high-linolenic accessions, both factors influenced all the characters except for STE. It was shown that the seeds of the northern reproduction contained more PAL and OLE, less LIN, and had lower IOD, which is not matched with the published data.
