Abstract
DNA has been analyzed in the Adalia bipunctata forms turanica, revelierei, and fasciatopunctata, which differ from the European variety A. bipunctata bipunctata in having many spots on red or pink elytra. These varieties are widespread in the margin of the geographic range of the species. Twenty mitochondrial haplotypes variable for the COI gene have been found, but none of them is unique for any of the forms: All individuals studied, regardless of their mitochondrial haplotype, have nearly identical ITS2 sequences. Adalia bipunctata forms entering the polymorphic populations reverlierei, turanica, and factiatopunctata are geographic races of A. bipunctata Differences in DNA structure indicate that Adalia bipunctata and Adalia frigida are close but distinct species.
