Absence of genetic introgression between Elymus ciliaris and E. pendulinus (Triticeae: Poaceae) according to the results of endosperm protein SDS-electrophoresis due to the hypotheses of the origin of E. amurensis

Abstract

The StY-genomic group of the Elymus genus species is of special interest since most of the species enters the territory of Russia from the territories on the southern border (mainly from China). The overlapping of the Elymus pendulinus, E. ciliaris, and E. amurensis areas within Russia is observed only in the southern part of the Far East. In domestic taxonomy, it is considered that the E. ciliaris is phylogenetically close to the E. pendulinus, and the independent E. amurensis species probably originated from the hybridization of these species. In China, the E. amurensis is recognized as one of the E. ciliaris varieties. In order to clarify the specificity of the species, a study of the endosperm protein polymorphism by SDS-electrophoresis was carried out in the E. pendulinus, E. ciliaris, and E. amurensis from a number of Primorskii krai regions. Accessions of the species from places of common growth were analyzed in order to detect common polypeptide components that could appear as a result of genetic introgression. Visual analysis of electrophoretic spectra and the construction of dendrograms using different measures of similarity demonstrated a high degree of specificity of the E. ciliaris and E. pendulinus and detected no traits of introgression in spite of the fact that the two species frequently grow in common ecotopes and even generate sterile hybrids. No traits of the E. amurensis origin from the highly isolated E. ciliaris and E. pendulinus species were detected. The necessity of using the methods of biosystematics and experimental genetics for the confirmation of the origin and taxonomic rank of new and a number of generally accepted species of the Elymus genus was demonstrated.
