Sintering and Properties of ZrO2–Al2O3 Composites with Additives Forming Melts Based on Sodium Silicate

Inorganic Materials: Applied Research Aims and scope

Abstract

A wide range of compositions of zirconia-based composites containing 0, 5, 10, 20 wt % alumina was studied. The dependences of the formation of microstructure and phase composition on the sintering temperature were established. It was shown that the introduction of additives forming low-temperature melts based on sodium silicates, Na2SiO3 and Na2Si2O5, led to a decrease in sintering temperature by 150–200°C. As a result, dense nanocrystalline materials with a crystal size of 50–200 nm, strength of up to 500 MPa, and sintering temperature of 1300–1400°C were obtained.
