Preparation of deuterium- or tritium-labeled nicotine

Abstract

Conditions were optimized for deuterium and tritium labeling of nicotine molecules applied onto a catalyst without using a solvent. Performing the reaction under these conditions at temperatures higher than 100°C leads to complete decomposition of nicotine molecules. Deuterium-labeled nicotine containing, on the average, 0.9 deuterium atom per molecule and tritium-labeled nicotine with a molar radioactivity of 10 Ci mmol−1 were prepared. The compound with the opened pyrrolidine ring is formed in the process as byproduct.
