Effect of praseodymium on the solid-state oxidation kinetics of an AMg2 alloy

  • Published:
Russian Metallurgy (Metally) Aims and scope

Abstract

Thermogravimetry is used to study the oxidation kinetics of an AMg2 alloy with praseodymium. The alloy oxidation is shown to obey a hyperbolic law. Praseodymium additions decrease the oxidation rate; this fact is indicated by an increase in the apparent activation energy from 39.3 to 71.5 kJ/mol. The true oxidation rate varies within a range of (2.91–2.32) × 10–4 kg/(m2 s) depending on the alloying element content.
