Fecundity of Lampreys of the World Fauna

Abstract

The results of the analysis of 89 publications providing primary data on the absolute fecundity of lampreys (Petromyzontiformes) of the world fauna, are presented. In 23 lamprey species, fecundity is either not determined, or information about it is present only in one publication. Considering the min–max range, these data are insufficient for an objective assessment of this parameter. Data on other species are presented in two or more publications, so they are more complete. In almost all studies, the length of females, in which fecundity is assessed, is less than the maximum length known for females of these species. This is true even for Lampetra fluviatilis and Petromyzon marinus; most abundant data have been collected for these species. Taking into account the direct dependence of fecundity on the female length, which is characteristic both for individual species and for lampreys in general, we assume that lamprey fecundity is underestimated at least for most species, so this parameter requires additional studies.
