Abstract—
We have intercalated bentonite using one-step treatment with an ammonium heptamolybdate ((NH4)6Mo7O24 ⋅ 4Н2O) solution containing citric acid additions and a two-step process that includes exposure to dimethyl sulfoxide vapor in the first step. The d001 interplanar spacing of the bentonite increased from 16.2 to 21.8 Å in the former case and to 23 Å in the latter. The degree of ammonium heptamolybdate intercalation was then 36–40 wt %. Kaolin intercalation compounds, with d001 = 10.98 Å (2θ = 7.52°), were only obtained using the two-step process, because of the rigid connection between the structural slabs of kaolin. The degree of intercalation of the precursors into the kaolin structure was 17 wt %, and the intercalation compound was stable up to 220°C.
