Abstract

Cases of superposition of auroral electric jets in the auroral zone at the instances of development of the Harang discontinuity have been found and described using the data from ground-based magnetometers. It is shown that special conditions for the development of elements of current systems form in the region of the Harang discontinuity, and those can be taken into account only with a special method of separating the types of variations according to morphological features. With an accuracy of determining the position of electric jets from ground data within tens of kilometers, the convergence of electric jets at the altitude of the ionospheric E-layer of 115 km is 20–30 km. The discovered properties of currents during the formation of the Harang discontinuity should be taken into account in the construction of an equivalent ionospheric current system that determines the dynamics of substorm development.
