Abstract

In current political discourses and policies at a national and European levels, the development of education is generally assumed to be one of the key determinants of what is now commonly referred to as social cohesion: in other words, the longer a society educates its members, the higher the level of social cohesion and the greater the likelihood of fostering strong and trusting relationships (see for instance OECDCERI, 2006). Very few studies have provided empirical evidence for this claim, and therefore the issue as to whether education determines social cohesion to the extent that we assume it does remains largely open.
