Abstract

Mutation breeding explores genetic diversity in useful traits to develop new, high-yielding, and improved cultivars. This five year study revealed different mutagenic treatments in bacterial wilt susceptible cultivar of Bell pepper [Capsicum annum (L.)]. Healthy and pure seeds of Bell pepper (California Wonder) were treated with gamma rays (0.5kR, 1kR, 3kR, 5kR, 8kR, 11kR, 13kR, 16kR, 19kR and 22kR) and ethyl methane sulphonate (EMS) (0.01%, 0.25%, 0.5%, 0.75%, 1.0%, 1.25%, 1.5%, 1.75%, 2.0% and 3.0%). A steady reduction in germination and subsequent survival of the treated population, seedling height and pollen fertility were observed with increasing doses/concentrations of mutagens regardless of the mutagens used. Mutagenic effectiveness decreased with increase in mutagen dose in gamma rays (physical mutagen treatments), but the trend was different for EMS which did not follow a regular descending or ascending order. Overall, EMS proved to be more efficient and effective mutagen than gamma irradiation. The coefficient of variation induced by EMS treatments was higher as compared to gamma treatments, suggesting that EMS was more effective than gamma rays. The viable mutants recorded with desirable characters will prove to be of potential value in conventional plant breeding.
