Mapping of potential sites for rainwater harvesting structures using GIS and MCDM approaches: case study of the Toudgha watershed, Morocco

Abstract

The Toudgha watershed, located in southeastern Morocco, is characterized by an arid climate and an erratic spatiotemporal rainfall distribution. In this area, rainwater harvesting structures play a considerable role in water supply application and ensure integrated water management. The main aim of this work was to develop water mobilization construction plans based on multi-criteria analysis in order to optimize the selection of sites for rainwater harvesting structures. Several criteria that control the availability of rainwater harvesting structure construction were selected and analyzed using remote sensing, geographic information systems, and the analytical hierarchy process, and were integrated in order to weight the influence of the selected criteria. As a result, and based on the multi-criteria decision maker, the potential areas were mapped and classified on the basis of their suitability for rainwater harvesting structure construction. Available areas for water harvesting systems accompanying agricultural activities and ecological tourism cover 87.72% of the total area of the watershed. Suitable zones for groundwater recharge due to fracture permeability were estimated to comprise about 12.35% of the total area of the watershed. Potential sites for rainwater harvesting structures, especially hill dams, account for 5.93% of the total area. The suitability of hill dams construction was confirmed by evaluating the storage capacities of four proposed dams. The results of this study provide decision makers with a useful map for water mobilization planning aimed at providing an additional water supply for various uses.
