Abstract

The water quality index (WQI) is an appropriate technique for the assessment of drinking water quality based on several water quality parameters. Due to the high and fluctuating pollution level in the Indian rivers, the existing WQI determination methods do not show the actual representation of the water quality status of Indian rivers. Since the existing deterministic WQI methods show inflexible classification and interpretative difficulties of crisp data, this study provides a fuzzy inference system-based fuzzy water quality index (FWQI) model for the assessment and prediction of surface water quality status in the Gwalior-Chambal region of India. The water samples were collected from twelve appropriate sample locations, and these samples were analyzed in the laboratory for the determination of physicochemical parameters of water, such as Turbidity, Total solids, DO, BOD, COD, pH, Acidity, Alkalinity, Hardness, Chloride, Dissolved solids, and MPN. The developed model has been validated by showing the similarities between the results obtained from deterministic WQI and FWQI. As well as, the results obtained from the FWQI model are seemed to be more realistic than deterministic WQI in case of high and fluctuating pollution levels of the Indian rivers. This study distinguishes between good and poor quality of surface water which consequently gives an idea for the removal of pollutants from surface water sources of the Gwalior-Chambal region.
