Kew Bulletin Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

The species known in the Federal District of Brazil as Oocephalus lythroides (formerly referred to as Hyptis lythroides) is actually a new species, with characters distinct from type material of O. lythroides, collected in the western part of Goiás state, near the border with Mato Grosso. The new species is named in honour of Dra Graziela Barroso. It is restricted to the Distrito Federal and nearby areas of Eastern Goiás, where it is a frequent component of the cerrado vegetation. Phylogenetic studies, based on DNA sequences, confirm its generic position. The characters which differentiate it from O. lythroides are given, and a selection of herbarium material is cited. Phenology and conservation status are also included.

Acknowledgements

I wish to acknowledge the support given by curators and their staff, especially Alan Paton, Gemma Bramley and Lesley Walsingham at the Herbarium of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (K), and Luciano Paganucci de Queiroz and Teonildes Sena at the Universidade Estadual de Feira da Santana (HUEFS), Bahia, who have generously given of their time, during visits made in the course of my researches for this paper. The molecular studies made by Dr Floriano Pastore, and our frequent discussions and correspondence, have also been pivotal in much of my present research, for which I owe him many thanks. I should also like to thank Margaret Tebbs for the excellent plate of Oocephalus grazielae. I must also thank the people, too numerous to mention individually, who provided the collections of this species, and whose names appear on the herbarium labels of the material I have studied. Finally I would like to thank my wife, Ana Maria Giulietti-Harley for helpful criticism of the paper, and for her constant help both in the field and in our many discussions, without which I would have achieved far less in my studies on Hyptidinae.
