Abstract

Examples of synchrotron-based investigations, chosen to illustrate various themes of research and development related to the nuclear fuel cycle, are summarised: (1) XAFS studies into the coordination chemistry of actinide versus lanthanide complexed with partitioning ligands to evaluate performance of separations, (2) high energy resolution X-ray emission measurements for characterizing electronic structure as a tool for fundamentally understanding actinide bonding and reactivity, and (3) investigation of processes leading to neptunium retention in a granite column tracer study using three dimensional imaging techniques.
