Synthesis and luminescent characteristics of green-emitting (Sr1−xMx)2SiO4:Tb3+ (M = Ba, Ca) phosphors

Abstract

A series of green-emitting Tb3+-doped Sr2SiO4 phosphors, (Sr1−xMx)2SiO4:Tb3+ (M = Ba, Ca), were synthesized by high-temperature solid-state reaction method. The luminescence properties of Ca2+/Ba2+ partially substituted Sr2SiO4:Tb3+ phosphors were investigated in detail by emission–excitation spectra, diffuse reflection spectra and temperature dependence spectra. The results showed that under UV excitation at 282 nm, all samples exhibited an intense green emission due to the 5D4 → 7FJ (J = 6, 5, 4, and 3) transitions of Tb3+. The luminescence intensity of Sr2SiO4:Tb3+ phosphors was improved to some degree for Ca2+/Ba2+ addition, particularly the addition of Ca2+ ion, and the optimum content was 15%. Energy band (Eg) of the obtained phosphors was also calculated to explain the mechanisms of fluorescent enhancement. Furthermore, (Sr0.85Ca0.15)2SiO4:Tb3+ showed a good thermal stability, which demonstrated that it should be a potential green phosphor for white LEDs.
