Tomography of Brain and Stereotactic Guidance

  • Published:
Biomedical Engineering Aims and scope

Methods using diagnostic magnetic resonance and combined computed positron-emission scanners in navigation providing minimally invasive stereotactic neurosurgical interventions on deep structures of the brain are discussed. Various models of scanners available from Siemens, General Electric, and Philips were used for stereotactic guidance to target points in the brain. Operations were performed in 597 patients with tumors of the brain, Parkinsonism, epilepsy, and other diseases of the central nervous system. It was noted that the technique allowed thorough preoperative planning of stereotactic interventions and high accuracy of targeting points in the brain.
