Abstract
Aim
To investigate bone mineral density (BMD) profiles, the prevalence of osteoporosis and its risk factors among adults aged ≥45 years in Liyang, southern Jiangsu Province, China.
Subject and methods
This was a population-based cross-sectional study of adults aged ≥45 years in Liyang City, Jiangsu Province, China. We used multiphase cluster random sampling to register a total of 10,179 participants between October 2019 and November 2020, and 6429 participants were included in the final analyses. All participants completed a questionnaire and underwent BMD measurements. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to examine the risk factors for osteoporosis, and the results were presented as odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).
Results
Crude prevalence of osteoporosis among all participants was 15.83%. Logistic regression analysis revealed that advanced age (OR = 3.00, 95% CI 2.62–3.42), female sex (OR = 1.53, 95% CI 1.32–1.77), fracture history (OR = 1.33, 95% CI 1.15–1.53), trauma history (OR = 1.50, 95% CI 1.14–1.97), and underweight (body mass index <18.5 kg/m2; OR = 2.08, 95% CI 1.40–3.09) were significantly associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis. Subgroup analysis revealed that female sex and underweight exhibited a combined effect on the risk of osteoporosis (OR = 4.32, 95% CI 2.49–7.49).
Conclusions
The prevalence of osteoporosis was high among middle-aged and elderly people in southern Jiangsu Province, China. Behavioral interventions should focus on underweight women aged ≥45 years to promote healthy lifestyles to prevent the development of osteoporosis.
