Abstract
We consider a class of vector-valued elliptic operators with unbounded coefficients, coupled up to the first order, in the Lebesgue space \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) with \(p \in (1,\infty )\). Sufficient conditions to prove generation results of an analytic \(C_0\)-semigroup \({\varvec{T}}(t)\), together with a characterization of the domain of its generator, are given. Some results related to the hypercontractivity and the ultraboundedness of the semigroup are also established.

1 Introduction
Systems of elliptic equations with unbounded coefficients appear naturally in several settings, e.g., in the analysis of Navier–Stokes equations and backward-forward stochastic differential equations in connection with Nash equilibria in the theory of games, see e.g., [1, 20, 23, 24] and also [10, 11, 21] for other relevant applications.
In this paper, we consider vector-valued elliptic operators with unbounded coefficients acting on smooth functions \({\varvec{f}}:{\mathbb {R}}^d\rightarrow {{\mathbb {R}}}^m\) (\(m \ge 2\)) as follows:
where Q, \(B^i\) \((i=1,\ldots ,d)\) and V are matrix-valued functions, Q is locally uniformly elliptic on \({\mathbb {R}}^d\) and \((\mathrm{div}(Q\nabla {\varvec{f}})_i=\mathrm{div}(Q\nabla f_i)\) for any \(i=1, \ldots , m\).
Under suitable quantitative assumptions on the coefficients of the operator, we prove that the realization of \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\) in \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\), with domain
generates an analytic \(C_0\)-semigroup \({\varvec{T}}_p(t)\). Refining gradually our main assumptions, we also prove the consistency of the semigroups \({\varvec{T}}_p(t)=:{\varvec{T}}(t)\) for \(p\ge p_0\) and a suitable \(p_0>1\) and for \(p\in (1,\infty )\). We then show that each operator \({\varvec{T}}(t)\) maps \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) into \(L^q({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) for \(p<q\le \infty\).
To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper aimed at providing a precise characterization of the domain of the infinitesimal generator of the associated semigroup, when also the diffusion coefficients of the operator \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\) are possibly unbounded and the operator is coupled up to the first order. Indeed, the description of the domain of the generator of operator \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\) in \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) has been provided only in the papers [22, 25, 28], but there the coefficients of the diffusion part are bounded, and in [7, 8] where there is no coupling in the first-order term.
The literature on systems of elliptic operators with unbounded coefficients concerns mainly the analysis in spaces of bounded and continuous functions and the study of the so-called invariant measures (see, e.g., [1,2,3, 6, 15]). On the other hand, the \(L^p\)-theory is not well developed and the literature concerns essentially weakly coupled elliptic operators (i.e., the coupling between the equations is through a potential term), whose diffusion coefficients are assumed to be uniformly elliptic and bounded.
The first result in this direction is [22], whose assumptions allow the diagonal drift term to grow like \(|x|\log (1+|x|)\) and the potential term like \(\log (1+|x|)\) as \(|x|\rightarrow \infty\), and the generation result is proved via a Dore-Venni-type theorem on sums of noncommuting operators, due to Monniaux and Prüss [32]. Note that this latter perturbation theorem requires information on the bounded imaginary powers of the realization in \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) of the principal part of the operator \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\). Unfortunately, such information for elliptic operators with unbounded coefficients is not available yet. The technique in [22] has been recently used in [25] to prove generation results in \(L^p\)-spaces for vector-valued Schrödinger operators of the form \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}{\varvec{u}}=\mathrm{div}(Q\nabla {\varvec{u}})-V{\varvec{u}}\). In that paper, the entries of the potential V of operator \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\) are locally Lipschitz continuous on \({\mathbb {R}}^d\), satisfy the conditions \(\langle V(x)\xi ,\xi \rangle \ge |\xi |^2\), for every \(x \in {\mathbb {R}}^d\), \(\xi \in {\mathbb {R}}^m\), and \(|D_j V(-V)^{-\alpha }|\in L^\infty ({\mathbb {R}}^d)\) for some \(\alpha \in [0,1/2)\). The last assumption allows for potentials V whose entries grow more than linearly at infinity. For instance, the potential \(V(x)= (1+|x|^r)V_0\), for every \(x\in {\mathbb {R}}^d\), where \(V_0\) is an antisymmetric constant matrix and \(r\in [1,2)\), is allowed, but no exponential growth rate at infinity is allowed.
Under slightly different hypotheses on the potential V (pointwise accretivity and local boundedness), generation results for the operator \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\) as above are proved in [26], but, differently from [25], only a weak characterization of the domain is provided (in fact, the generation result is proved in the maximal domain of the realization of the operator \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\) in \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\)).
A more general class of potentials, whose diagonal entries are polynomials of type \(|x|^\alpha\) or even \(|x|^r \log (1+|x|)\) as well as \(e^{|x|}\), for \(\alpha ,r\ge 1\), is considered in [28] where the operator \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\) is perturbed by the potential vI where the function \(v\in W^{1,\infty }_\mathrm{loc}({\mathbb {R}}^d)\) satisfies the condition \(|\nabla v|\le cv\) for some positive constant c. A perturbation theorem (due to Okazawa [33] and used in [28]) works for a more general diagonal perturbation of V in the \(L^2\)-setting (see [7]), allowing for different growth rates in the diagonal entries of the potential matrix. In [7] the operator \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\) is also perturbed by a diagonal first-order term that can grow at most linearly at infinity.
Assuming that the diffusion coefficients are bounded, our assumptions (see Hypotheses 3.1) cover the cases considered in [22, 25, 26, 28], where roughly speaking the coefficients may grow at most polynomially, allowing also for some exponential growth. We point out that, already in the case of Schrödinger vector-valued operators, our hypotheses allow for the entries of V to grow at infinity as \(e^{|x|^\beta }\), for every \(\beta >0\), improving the growth-rate considered in [28] (see Example 5.1).
To our knowledge, the only other paper where systems of elliptic equations with unbounded diffusion coefficients are considered is [9]. In that paper, the semigroup constructed in the spaces of bounded and continuous functions is extrapolated to the \(L^p\)-scale, but the technique adopted does not provide any information on the domain of the infinitesimal generator of the semigroups. Moreover, the assumptions therein considered either impose a sign on the drift term and require that the quadratic form associated with the matrix-valued function \(-2V-\sum _iD_iB^i\) is bounded from above, or force the matrices \(B^i\) to be bounded when the diffusion coefficients are themselves bounded. Such restrictions are not needed under our set of assumptions.
The present paper is organized as follows. In Sect. 2, we provide conditions that ensure that \(C^{\infty }_c({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) is a core for the maximal realization of operator \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\) in \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\), when \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\) is a vector-valued elliptic operator with a diagonal drift. Section 3 is the main body of the paper. Here, we introduce and comment the main assumptions and prove the generation result (see Theorem 3.3 and Proposition 3.9). Next, in Sect. 4 we first associate a semigroup in \(C_b({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) to the operator \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\) and use this result to prove the consistency of the semigroups \({\varvec{T}}_p(t)\) and summability improving results. Examples of classes of operators to which our results apply are provided in Sect. 5. Finally, some technicalities are postponed to appendix for an easier reading of the paper.
Notation. Let \(d, m\in {{\mathbb {N}}}\) and let \({\mathbb {K}}={\mathbb {R}}\) or \({\mathbb {K}}={\mathbb {C}}\). We denote by \(\langle \cdot , \cdot \rangle\) and by \(|\cdot |\), respectively, the Euclidean inner product and the norm in \({\mathbb {K}}^m\). Vector-valued functions are displayed in bold style. Given a function \({\varvec{u}}: \Omega \subseteq {\mathbb {R}}^d\rightarrow {{\mathbb {K}}}^m\), we denote by \(u_k\) its k-th component. For every \(p\in [1,\infty )\), \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d, {\mathbb {K}}^m)\) denotes the classical vector-valued Lebesgue space endowed with the norm \(\Vert {\varvec{f}}\Vert _p=(\int _{{\mathbb {R}}^d} |{\varvec{f}}(x)|^pdx)^{1/p}\). The canonical pairing between \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d, {\mathbb {K}}^m)\) and \(L^{p'}({\mathbb {R}}^d, {\mathbb {K}}^m)\) (\(p'\) being the index conjugate to p), i.e., the integral over \({\mathbb {R}}^d\) of the function \(x\mapsto \langle {\varvec{u}}(x), {\varvec{v}}(x)\rangle\) when \({\varvec{u}}\in L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d, {\mathbb {K}}^m)\) and \({\varvec{v}}\in L^{p'}({\mathbb {R}}^d, {\mathbb {K}}^m)\), is denoted by \(\langle {\varvec{u}},{\varvec{v}}\rangle _{p,p'}\). For \(k\in {\mathbb {N}}\), \(W^{k,p}({\mathbb {R}}^d, {\mathbb {K}}^m)\) is the classical vector-valued Sobolev space, i.e., the space of all functions \({\varvec{u}}\in L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d, {\mathbb {K}}^m)\) whose components have distributional derivatives up to the order k, which belong to \(L^p({{\mathbb {R}}}^d, {\mathbb {K}})\). The norm of \(W^{k,p}({\mathbb {R}}^d, {\mathbb {K}}^m)\) is denoted by \(\Vert \cdot \Vert _{k,p}\). Given a \(d\times d\)-matrix-valued function Q, we denote by \({{\mathfrak {q}}}(u,v)\) the function defined by \(x\mapsto \langle Q(x)\nabla u(x),\nabla v(x)\rangle\) on smooth enough functions u and v. We simply write \({{\mathfrak {q}}}(u)\) when \(u=v\). Finally, given a vector-valued function \({\varvec{u}}\) and \(\varepsilon >0\), we denote by \(|{\varvec{u}}|_{\varepsilon }\) the scalar valued function \(|{\varvec{u}}|_{\varepsilon }=(|{\varvec{u}}|^2+\varepsilon )^{1/2}\).
2 Cores
The aim of this section is to prove vector-valued versions of results about cores for elliptic operators with unbounded coefficients, in the line of those proved in [4]. Throughout the section, we will consider the elliptic operator \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\) in (1.1) assuming that \(B^i=b_iI\) for some functions \(b_i:{\mathbb {R}}^d\rightarrow {{\mathbb {R}}}\), \(i=1, \ldots ,d\), and we set \({\varvec{b}}=(b_1,\ldots ,b_d)\).
In the following lemma we adapt some known results about scalar elliptic regularity to the vector-valued case.
Lemma 2.1
Suppose that Q is symmetric and that \(\langle Q (x) \xi ,\xi \rangle >0\) for any \(x \in {\mathbb {R}}^d\) and \(\xi \in {\mathbb {R}}^d\setminus \{0\}\). Further, suppose that \(q_{ij}, b_i \in C^1({\mathbb {R}}^d)\) for \(i,j=1, \dots , d\), \(v_{hk} \in L^{\infty }_{\mathrm {loc}}({\mathbb {R}}^d)\) for \(h,k=1, \dots , m\) and \({\varvec{u}}\in L^p_\mathrm{loc}({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\), \(\varvec{f}\in L^p_{\mathrm {loc}}({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) for some \(p\in (1,\infty )\) satisfy the variational formula

Proof
Let \({\varvec{e}}_1,\ldots ,{\varvec{e}}_m\) denote the canonical basis of \({\mathbb {R}}^m\). Writing (2.1) with \(\varvec{\varphi }=\varphi \mathbf{e}_h\) for some \(\varphi \in C_c^\infty ({\mathbb {R}}^d)\) and \(h\in \{1, \dots , m\}\) we get
By the arbitrariness of h we get the assertion from the scalar case, by applying standard elliptic regularity (see, e.g., [27, Theorem D.1.4(iv)]). \(\square\)
Theorem 2.2
Let the hypotheses of Lemma 2.1 be satisfied. Further, assume that there exists a positive function \(\psi \in C^1({\mathbb {R}}^d)\) such that \(\lim _{|x|\rightarrow \infty }\psi (x)=\infty\) and
in \({\mathbb {R}}^d\) for every \(\xi \in {\mathbb {R}}^m\), some positive constants \(C_1\), \(C_2\) and some \(p \in (1,\infty )\). Then, the operator \((\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}, C_c^{\infty }({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m))\) is closable on \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) and its closure generates a strongly continuous semigroup.
Proof
First, we observe that, thanks to (2.4), \((\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}, C_c^{\infty }({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m))\) is dissipative. Hence, by [16, Proposition 3.14] we deduce that \((\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}, C_c^{\infty }({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m))\) is closable on \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\). Then, we have only to show that \((\lambda I- \varvec{{\mathcal {A}}})(C_c^\infty ({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m))\) is dense in \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) for some \(\lambda >0\). Since \(\psi (x)\) tends to \(\infty\) as \(|x|\rightarrow \infty\), without loss of generality we can assume that \(\psi (x)\ge 1\) for every \(x\in {\mathbb {R}}^d\).
Fix \(\lambda >0\) and let \({\varvec{u}}\in L^{p'}({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) be such that \(\langle \lambda \varvec{\varphi } - \varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\varvec{\varphi }, {\varvec{u}}\rangle _{p,p'}=0\) or, equivalently, \(\langle \varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\varvec{\varphi },{\varvec{u}}\rangle _{p,p'}=\lambda \langle \varvec{\varphi },{\varvec{u}}\rangle _{p,p'}\) for every \(\varvec{\varphi }\in C_c^\infty ({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\). We claim that \({\varvec{u}}\in W^{2,r}_\mathrm{loc}({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) for some \(r>d\) so that, in particular, \({\varvec{u}}\in C^1({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\). For this purpose, we observe that, by Lemma 2.1, \({\varvec{u}}\in W^{2,p'}_{\mathrm {loc}}({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\). If \(p'>d\), then we are done. Otherwise, we apply the Sobolev embedding theorem, to infer that \({\varvec{u}}\in L^{q_1}_\mathrm{loc}({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) for some \(q_1>p'\) and, consequently, by Lemma 2.1, \({\varvec{u}}\in W^{2,q_1}_\mathrm{loc}({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\). If \(q_1>d\), then we are done; otherwise, we iterate the procedure and in a finite number of steps we get the claim by a bootstrap argument.
Summing up, we have shown that
for every \(\varvec{\varphi } \in C_c^\infty ({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\). Equality (2.5) extends by density to every function \(\varvec{\varphi } \in L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) with compact support.
Fix a smooth decreasing function \(\zeta :[0,\infty )\rightarrow [0,1]\) such that \(\zeta (s)=1\) if \(s\in [0,1]\) and \(\zeta (s)=0\) if \(s\ge 2\), and set \(\zeta _n=\zeta (n^{-1}\log \psi )\). Clearly \(\zeta _n\in C_c^\infty ({\mathbb {R}}^d)\) and \(\lim _{n\rightarrow \infty }\zeta _n(x)=1\) for every \(x\in {\mathbb {R}}^d\). Note that the function \(\varvec{\varphi }_n:= \zeta _n^2 {\varvec{u}}|{\varvec{u}}|_{\varepsilon }^{p'-2} = \zeta _n^2{\varvec{u}}(|{\varvec{u}}|^2+\varepsilon )^{(p'-2)/2}\) belongs to \(W^{1,p}({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) (since \({\varvec{u}}\in C^1({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\)) and has compact support. Hence, writing (2.5) with \(\varvec{\varphi }=\varvec{\varphi }_n\) and integrating by parts the second-order term, we get

Theorem 2.3
In addition to the hypotheses of Lemma 2.1, let us assume that condition (2.4) holds true and that there exists a positive function \(\psi \in C^1({\mathbb {R}}^d)\), which diverges to \(\infty\) as |x| tends to \(\infty\), such that
for some constants \(C_1,C_2>0\). Then, the realization \(\varvec{A}_p\) of the operator \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\) in \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d,{{\mathbb {R}}}^m)\), with domain \(D_{p,\mathrm{max}}=\{ {\varvec{u}}\in L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\cap W_{\mathrm {loc}}^{2,p}({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m): \varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}{\varvec{u}}\in L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\}\), generates a contraction semigroup in \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\). Moreover, the space \(C_c^\infty ({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) is a core for \((\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}, D_{p,\mathrm{max}})\).
In the particular case when \({\varvec{b}}\) identically vanishes and \(\langle V(x)\xi ,\xi \rangle \ge 0\) for every \(x,\xi \in {\mathbb {R}}^d\), the previous semigroups exist for every \(p\in (1,\infty )\) and are consistent.
Proof
Let \(({\overline{\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}}}, D)\) be the closure of \((\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}, C_c^\infty ({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m))\) in \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) and fix \({\varvec{u}}\in D\). Then, there exists a sequence \(({\varvec{u}}_n)\) in \(C_c^\infty ({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) such that \({\varvec{u}}_n\) and \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}{\varvec{u}}_n\) converge, respectively to some function \({\varvec{u}}\) and \(\varvec{g}\) in \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\), as n tends to \(\infty\). Hence, for every \(\varvec{\varphi }\in C_c^\infty ({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) it follows that
where \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}^*\) is the formal adjoint to the operator \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\), which implies that \({\overline{\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}}} {\varvec{u}}=\ \varvec{g} =\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}{\varvec{u}}\) distributionally. By Lemma 2.1, we deduce that \({\varvec{u}}\in D_{p,\max }\).
Let us now prove that \(\lambda I- \varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\) is injective on \(D_{p,\mathrm{max}}\) for some \(\lambda >0\). For this purpose, we fix \({\varvec{u}}\in D_{p,\max }\) such that \(\lambda {\varvec{u}}=\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}{\varvec{u}}\). Then, for every \(\varvec{\varphi }\in C_c^\infty ({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\), it holds that \(\langle {\varvec{u}}, \lambda \varvec{\varphi } - \varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}^* \varvec{\varphi } \rangle _{p,p'} = \langle \lambda {\varvec{u}}-\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}{\varvec{u}}, \varvec{\varphi }\rangle _{p,p'}=0\). Since \(C_c^\infty ({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) is a core for \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}^*\) in \(L^{p'}({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\), due to Theorem 2.2, we conclude that \({\varvec{u}}=\mathbf{0}\).
Next, we fix a function \({\varvec{u}}\in D_{p,\max }\) and set \(\varvec{v}=\lambda {\varvec{u}}- \varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}{\varvec{u}}\). If \(p,q\in (1,2]\), then we observe that the operator \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}^*\) adjoint to \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\) satisfies the same assumptions as the operator \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\). 3 The full operator \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\)

Remark 3.2
The above assumptions might seem somehow restrictive and only technical. Actually, elliptic operators with unbounded coefficients exhibit a bad behavior in the usual \(L^p\)-spaces with respect to the Lebesgue measure unless suitable (strong) conditions are assumed on their coefficients. An easy scalar one-dimensional counterexample shows that, even in the case when the diffusion coefficient of the operator \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\) is constant and the drift grows slightly more than linearly at infinity, there exists no realization of the operator \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\) in \(L^p({{\mathbb {R}}})\) which generates a strongly continuous or an analytic semigroup (see [34]). Similar pathological behaviors are exhibited in the vector-valued case (see, e.g., [22, Example 2.2], [25, Example 2.3], [9, Sect. 3]). So, in order to prove generation results, one has to require strong conditions on the growth of the drift term or, as an alternative, to assume the existence of a dominating potential term .
Our assumptions on the diffusion coefficients of operator \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\) are inspired by those considered in [29] (see also [12, 13]) where the scalar equation is studied. Hypotheses 3.1(iv), (vi) guarantee the sectoriality of the operator \(-\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\), in the sense of [19], Definitions 1.5.8. On the other hand, inequality (3.1) and the oscillation condition in Hypothesis 3.1(v) are crucial to interpolate the term \(\sum _{i=1}^d B_i D_i{\varvec{u}}\) between \(\mathrm{div}(Q\nabla {\varvec{u}})\) and \(V{\varvec{u}}\).
For every \(p\in (1,\infty )\), let \({\varvec{A}}_p\) denote the realization of the operator \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\) in \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) with domain
where \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}_0{\varvec{u}}:=\mathrm{div}(Q\nabla {\varvec{u}})\). On \(D_p\) we consider the norm \(\Vert {\varvec{u}}\Vert _{D_p}=\Vert \varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}_0{\varvec{u}}\Vert _p+\Vert v{\varvec{u}}\Vert _p\), which is clearly equivalent to the norm \({\varvec{u}}\mapsto \Vert {\varvec{u}}\Vert _p+\Vert \varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}_0{\varvec{u}}\Vert _p+\Vert V{\varvec{u}}\Vert _p\) due to Hypothesis 3.1(iv) which implies that \(\Vert v{\varvec{u}}\Vert _p\le \Vert V{\varvec{u}}\Vert _p\le c_1\Vert v{\varvec{u}}\Vert _p\) and \(\Vert {\varvec{u}}\Vert _p \le c_0^{-1}\Vert v{\varvec{u}}\Vert _p\) for every \({\varvec{u}}\in L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {C}}^m)\). Since \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}_0\) is a closed operator, \(D_p\) endowed with the norm \(\Vert \cdot \Vert _{D_p}\) is a Banach space.
We can now state the main generation result:
Theorem 3.3
Under Hypotheses 3.1, assume further the condition
if \(p\in (1,2)\), and the condition
if \(p\ge 2\). Then, the operator \({\varvec{A}}_p\) generates an analytic contraction semigroup \({\varvec{T}}_p(t)\) in \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{{\mathbb {C}}}^m)\). Moreover, if the above assumptions are satisfied also for some \(1<q\ne p\), then \({\varvec{T}}_p(t){\varvec{f}}={\varvec{T}}_q(t){\varvec{f}}\) for all \({\varvec{f}}\in L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d; {{\mathbb {C}}}^m)\cap L^q({\mathbb {R}}^d;{{\mathbb {C}}}^m)\).

(3.3)) holds true with \(\kappa\) being replaced by \(\kappa +\varepsilon\). In particular, if (3.6) is satisfied by every \(\kappa >0\), then conditions (3.2) and (3.3) reduce to \(\theta <p\). Hence, if \(\theta <1\), then we get generation results of a family of consistent semigroups for every \(p\in (1,\infty )\).

Adapting the arguments in [29, Lemma 2.5, Proposition 3.3] and using Hypothesis 3.1(v), we can show that, for every \(\varepsilon >0\), there exists a positive constant \(K_\varepsilon\), depending also on p and the constants \(\kappa , c_0,c_1, c_2, \gamma , C_\gamma\), such thatFootnote 1

Here, we prove that \(D_p=D_{p,\max }(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}_0-V):=\{{\varvec{u}}\in L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {C}}^m): \varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}_0{\varvec{u}}-V{\varvec{u}}\in L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {C}}^m)\}\) and that \(C^{\infty }_c({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) is dense in \(D_p\). Clearly, \(D_p\subset D_{p,\max }(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}_0-V)\), so let us prove the other inclusion. We fix \({\varvec{u}}\in D_{p,\max }(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}_0-V)\) and observe that Theorem 2.3 guarantees the existence of a sequence \(({\varvec{u}}_n)\subset C^{\infty }_c({\mathbb {R}}^d;{{\mathbb {R}}}^m)\) converging to \({\varvec{u}}\) in \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{{\mathbb {R}}}^m)\) and such that \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}_0{\varvec{u}}_n-V{\varvec{u}}_n\) converges to \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}_0{\varvec{u}}-V{\varvec{u}}\) in \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{{\mathbb {R}}}^m)\) as n tends to \(\infty\). Step 1, applied with \(B^i=0\), shows that \(({\varvec{u}}_n)\) is a Cauchy sequence in \(D_p\) endowed with the norm \(\Vert \cdot \Vert _{D_p}\). Since this latter is a Banach space, we conclude that \({\varvec{u}}\in D_p\) and the inclusion \(D_{p,\max }(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}_0-V)\subset D_p\) follows. This argument also shows that \(C^{\infty }_c({\mathbb {R}}^d;{{\mathbb {R}}}^m)\) is dense in \(D_p\).
Step 3. Here, we prove that the operator \((\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}, D_p)\) generates an analytic contraction semigroup in \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {C}}^m)\). In view of Proposition 3.6, [19, Theorem 1.5.9], it suffices to show that the operator \(I-\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}: D_p\rightarrow L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {C}}^m)\) is surjective. For this purpose, we apply the continuity method (see, e.g., [18, Theorem 5.2]). For every \(t\in [0,1]\), we introduce the operator
Due to the density of \(C^{\infty }_c({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) in \(D_p\), we can first extend (3.25) to every \({\varvec{u}}\in D_p\) and, then, using this inequality, we can extend (3.24) to every \({\varvec{u}}\in D_p\). Thus, we can determine a positive constant K, independent of \(t\in [0,1]\), such that \(\Vert \varvec{{\mathcal {L}}}_t{\varvec{u}}\Vert _{p} \ge K \Vert {\varvec{u}}\Vert _{D_p}\) for every \(t\in [0,1]\) and \({\varvec{u}}\in D_p\). Moreover, Theorem 2.3 and Step 2 show that the operator \((\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}_0-V,D_p)\) generates a strongly continuous semigroup of contractions in \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {C}}^m)\). Hence, the operator \(\varvec{{\mathcal {L}}}_0\) is surjective on \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {C}}^m)\). Since the operator \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}_0\) has real-valued coefficients, it follows that \(\varvec{{\mathcal {L}}}_0\) is surjective on \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {C}}^m)\). The continuity method applies showing that also the operator \(\varvec{{\mathcal {L}}}_1=I-\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}:D_p\rightarrow L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {C}}^m)\) is surjective.
Step 4. Finally we complete the proof, showing that, if q is a different index in \((1,\infty )\), which satisfies the assumptions of the theorem, then \({\varvec{T}}_p(t){\varvec{f}}={\varvec{T}}_q(t){\varvec{f}}\) for every \(t>0\) and \({\varvec{f}}\in L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {C}}^m)\cap L^q({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {C}}^m)\). Since both \({\varvec{T}}_p(t)\) and \({\varvec{T}}_q(t)\) map functions with values in \({{\mathbb {R}}}^m\) in functions with values in \({\mathbb {R}}^m\), we can limit ourselves to considering functions with values in \({{\mathbb {R}}}^m\). By Theorem 2.3, the semigroups generated by the closure of the operator \((\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}_0-V,C^{\infty }_c({\mathbb {R}}^d;{{\mathbb {R}}}^m))\) in \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{{\mathbb {R}}}^m)\) and in \(L^q({\mathbb {R}}^d;{{\mathbb {R}}}^m)\), coincide on \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{{\mathbb {R}}}^m)\cap L^q({\mathbb {R}}^d;{{\mathbb {R}}}^m)\). As a by-product, writing the resolvent operators as the Laplace transform of the semigroups, we infer that the resolvent operators coincide on \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{{\mathbb {R}}}^m)\cap L^q({\mathbb {R}}^d;{{\mathbb {R}}}^m)\). Therefore, for every \({\varvec{f}}\in L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{{\mathbb {R}}}^m)\cap L^q({\mathbb {R}}^d;{{\mathbb {R}}}^m)\) and \(\lambda \in {{\mathbb {R}}}\) sufficiently large there exists a unique \({\varvec{u}}\in D_p\cap D_q\) which solves the equation \(\lambda {\varvec{u}}-\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}_0{\varvec{u}}+V{\varvec{u}}={\varvec{f}}\).
Next, we observe that all the computations in the previous steps can be performed replacing \(\Vert \cdot \Vert _{D_p}\) with \(\Vert \cdot \Vert _{D_p} + \Vert \cdot \Vert _{D_q}\) and by applying the method of continuity in the space \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d; {\mathbb {R}}^m)\cap L^q({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) endowed with the norm \(\Vert \cdot \Vert _p+\Vert \cdot \Vert _q\). It follows that \(\lambda I-\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}: D_p\cap D_q\rightarrow L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d; {\mathbb {R}}^m)\cap L^q({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) is invertible for every \(\lambda >0\), and therefore \((\lambda I- {\varvec{A}}_p)^{-1}{\varvec{f}}=(\lambda I-{\varvec{A}}_q)^{-1}{\varvec{f}}\) for every \({\varvec{f}}\in L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d; {\mathbb {R}}^m)\cap L^q({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\). 4 The semigroup in \(C_b({\mathbb {R}}^d;{{\mathbb {R}}}^m)\)
In this section, under suitable assumptions on the coefficients of the operator \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\), we associate a semigroup \({\varvec{T}}_{\infty }(t)\) with \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\) in \(C_b({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {C}}^m)\) that, under the assumptions of Theorem 3.3, is consistent with \({\varvec{T}}(t)\). Again, we can limit ourselves to considering functions with values in \({{\mathbb {R}}}^m\).

The assumptions on the matrix-valued function Q and on v guarantee that, for every \(f\in C_b({\mathbb {R}}^d)\), there exists a unique function \(u\in C_b([0,\infty )\times {\mathbb {R}}^d)\cap C^{1,2}((0,\infty )\times {\mathbb {R}}^d)\) such that \(D_tu={{\mathcal {A}}}_vu\) on \((0,\infty )\times {\mathbb {R}}^d\) and \(u(0,\cdot )=f\) (see [27, 30]). Setting \(S(t)f:=u(t,\cdot )\) for every \(t\ge 0\), we define a semigroup of bounded operators on \(C_b({\mathbb {R}}^d)\) which satisfies the estimate \(\Vert S(t)\Vert _{{{\mathcal {L}}}(C_b({\mathbb {R}}^d))}\le e^{-c_0t}\) (see, for instance, [5, Proposition 2.2]).
Theorem 4.2
Under Hypotheses 4.1, for every \({\varvec{f}}\in C_b({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) the Cauchy problem

The proof of this result is standard. The uniqueness of the locally in time bounded classical solution \({\varvec{u}}\) follows from estimate
which can be proved by considering the function \(z=|{\varvec{u}}|^2-S(\cdot )|{\varvec{f}}|^2\), which satisfies the inequality \(D_tz-{{\mathcal {A}}}_vz\le 0\) and vanishes when \(t=0\). A variant of the classical maximum principle (see [27, Theorem 3.1.3]) implies that \(z(t,x) \le 0\) for every \((t,x)\in (0,\infty )\times {\mathbb {R}}^d\), and the assertion follows.
The existence part can be obtained by compactness, considering the sequence \(({\varvec{u}}_n)\subset C^{1+\alpha /2, 2+\alpha }_\mathrm{loc}((0,\infty )\times B(0,n))\cap C_b([0,\infty )\times B(0,n))\) of functions such that \(D_t{\varvec{u}}_n=\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}{\varvec{u}}_n\) on \((0,\infty )\times B(0,n)\), \({\varvec{u}}_n\) vanishes on \((0,\infty )\times \partial B(0,n)\) and equals function \({\varvec{f}}\) on \(\{0\}\times B(0,n)\) for every \(n\in {{\mathbb {N}}}\). Each function \({\varvec{u}}_n\) also satisfies the estimate \(\Vert {\varvec{u}}_n(t,\cdot )\Vert _{\infty }\le e^{-c_0t}\) for every \(t>0\). We refer the reader to [1, Theorem 2.8] for the missing details. \(\square\)
Thanks to Theorem 4.2 we can associate a semigroup \({\varvec{T}}_{\infty }(t)\) to \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\) in \(C_b({\mathbb {R}}^d,{\mathbb {R}}^m)\), by setting \({\varvec{T}}_\infty (\cdot ){\varvec{f}}:={\varvec{u}}\), where \({\varvec{u}}\) is the solution to Cauchy problem (4.1) provided by Theorem 4.2. Clearly, \(\Vert {\varvec{T}}_\infty (t)\Vert _{{{\mathcal {L}}}(C_b({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m))}\le e^{-c_0t}\) for every \(t>0\). This semigroup can be easily extended to \(C_b({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {C}}^m)\) in a straightforward way.
In order to show that the semigroups \({\varvec{T}}_p(t)\) (\(p \ge p_0\)) are consistent also with \({\varvec{T}}_\infty (t)\) on \(C_b({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) and, hence, on \(C_b({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {C}}^m)\) we show that the domain \(D({\varvec{A}})\) of the weak generator of \({\varvec{T}}_\infty (t)\) coincides with the maximal domain of \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\) in \(C_b({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\). The notion of weak generator \({\varvec{A}}\) has been extended to vector-valued elliptic operators with unbounded coefficients in [2, 15] mimicking the classical definition of infinitesimal generator of a strongly continuous semigroup. Its domain is the set of all functions \({\varvec{u}}\in C_b({\mathbb {R}}^d;{{\mathbb {R}}}^m)\) such that the function \(t\mapsto t^{-1}({\varvec{T}}_{\infty }(t){\varvec{u}}-{\varvec{u}})\) is bounded in (0, 1] with values in \(C_b({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) and it pointwise converges on \({\mathbb {R}}^d\) to a continuous function, which defines \({{\varvec{A}}}{\varvec{u}}\).
Proposition 4.3
Under Hypotheses 4.1, the weak generator of the semigroup \({\varvec{T}}(t)\) coincides with the realization of the operator \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\) on \(D_\mathrm{max}(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}})\), where

Taking (4.2) into account and arguing as in the proof of [2, Proposition 2.2] the inclusion \(D({\varvec{A}})\subset D_\mathrm{max}(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}})\) can be easily proved. Thus, \(D({\varvec{A}})= D_\mathrm{max}(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}})\) if and only if \(\lambda I-{\varvec{A}}\) is injective on \(D_\mathrm{max}(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}})\). To prove the injectivity of this operator, we fix a function \({\varvec{u}}\in D_\mathrm{max}(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}})\) such that \(\lambda {\varvec{u}}-\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}{\varvec{u}}={\varvec{0}}\). Suppose that the assumptions of Theorem 3.3 are satisfied, for every \(p\ge p_0\) and some \(p_0>1\), as well as Hypotheses 4.1. Assume also that \(p\kappa ^2 m-4(p-1)^2\le 0\), if \(p\in (1,2)\). We fix \(\lambda >0\), \({\varvec{f}}\in C_b({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\), with compact support, and consider the resolvent equation \(\lambda {\varvec{u}}-\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}{\varvec{u}}={\varvec{f}}\). By Theorem 3.3 and Proposition 4.3 the previous equation admits a unique solution \({\varvec{u}}_r\in D({\varvec{A}}_r)\), for every \(r\in [p_0,\infty )\), and a unique solution \(\mathbf{u}_{\infty }\in D_{\max }(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}})\). Since \({\varvec{u}}_r\) is the Laplace transform of the semigroup \({\varvec{T}}_r(t)\), the consistency of the semigroups \({\varvec{T}}_p(t)\) and \({\varvec{T}}_q(t)\) implies that \({\varvec{u}}_p={\varvec{u}}_q\) for \(p,q\in [p_0,\infty )\). Hence, we can simply write \({\varvec{u}}\) instead of \({\varvec{u}}_p\), and \({\varvec{u}}\in W^{2,q}_\mathrm{loc}({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) for every \(q\in [p_0,\infty )\), so that it is continuous over \({\mathbb {R}}^d\). To prove that it is also bounded on \({\mathbb {R}}^d\), we fix \(r>0\), arbitrarily, and \(R>0\) such that \(\mathrm{supp}({\varvec{f}})\subset B(0,R)\). Since the operator \({\varvec{A}}_q\) is dissipative, we have the estimate \(\Vert {\varvec{u}}\Vert _{L^q(B(0,r);{\mathbb {R}}^m)}\le \Vert {\varvec{u}}\Vert _q\le \lambda ^{-1}\Vert {\varvec{f}}\Vert _{L^q(B(0,R);{\mathbb {R}}^m)}\). Letting q tend to \(\infty\) and using the arbitrariness of \(r>0\), we conclude that \({\varvec{u}}\) is bounded over \({\mathbb {R}}^d\), so that it belongs to \(C_b({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\). Since \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}{\varvec{u}}=\lambda {\varvec{u}}-{\varvec{f}}\), the function \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}{\varvec{u}}\) is bounded and continuous over \({\mathbb {R}}^d\). Thus, \({\varvec{u}}\in D_{\max }(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}})\) and the equality \({\varvec{u}}={\varvec{u}}_{\infty }\) follows. Hence,
Using (4.4) and the uniqueness of the Laplace transform one obtains \({\varvec{T}}_p(t){\varvec{f}}={\varvec{T}}_\infty (t){\varvec{f}}\) for every \(t>0\). To remove the condition on the support of \({\varvec{f}}\), we observe that every function \({\varvec{f}}\in C_b({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\cap L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) is the limit in \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) of a sequence \(({\varvec{f}}_n)\subset C^{\infty }_c({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) which is bounded in \(C_b({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) and converge to \({\varvec{f}}\) pointwise in \({\mathbb {R}}^d\). Taking the limit as n tends to \(\infty\) in the equality \({\varvec{T}}_p(t){\varvec{f}}_n={\varvec{T}}_{\infty }(t){\varvec{f}}_n\), we complete the proof. \(\square\)
Theorem 4.5
Let the assumptions of Proposition 4.4 be satisfied. Further, assume that the function v belongs to \(C^2({\mathbb {R}}^d)\), blows up at infinity and, in addition, satisfies the inequality \({\mathcal {A}}_v v\le M\) in \({\mathbb {R}}^d\) for some positive constant M, if \(p\in (1,2)\). Then, the semigroup \({\varvec{T}}(t)\) maps \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {C}}^m)\) into \(L^q({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {C}}^m)\) for every \(t>0\) and \(p_0\le p\le q\le \infty\). Moreover, for every \(T>0\), there exists a positive constant \(C=C(T,p,q)\) such that

Also in this case we prove the assertion for functions with values in \({{\mathbb {R}}}^m\). For every \(p\in [p_0,\infty )\), we consider the contraction semigroup \(S_p(t)\) generated by the operator \({\mathcal {A}}_v\), with domain \(D_p({\mathcal {A}}_v):=\{u\in L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d)\,\mid \, {{\mathcal {A}}}_0u, vu\in L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d)\}\), in \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d)\) (see [29, Theorem 2.4]). The restriction of the semigroup \(S_2(t)\) to \(L^2({\mathbb {R}}^d)\cap L^1({\mathbb {R}}^d)\) can be extended to a contraction \(C_0\)-semigroup \(S_1(t)\) on \(L^1({{\mathbb {R}}}^d)\) which is consistent with \(S_p(t)\) for each \(p\in (1,\infty )\). Indeed, fix \(f\in L^2({\mathbb {R}}^d)\cap L^1({\mathbb {R}}^d)\) and \(r>0\). Then, \(f\in L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d)\) for every \(1<p<2\) and, since the semigroups \(S_p(t)\) are consistent, we get
By letting r tend to \(\infty\), we conclude that the restriction of \(S_2(t)\) to \(L^2({\mathbb {R}}^d)\cap L^1({\mathbb {R}}^d)\) extends, by density, to a contraction semigroup \(S_1(t)\) on \(L^1({\mathbb {R}}^d)\). Moreover, if \(f\in C_c^\infty ({\mathbb {R}}^d)\), then
Hence for every \(p>1\) it follows that \(\Vert S_1(t)f-f\Vert _{L^p(B(0,r))} \le t\Vert {\mathcal {A}}_vf\Vert _p\). Letting first p tend to 1 and then r tend to \(\infty\), we deduce that \(S_1(t)f\) converges to f in \(L^1({\mathbb {R}}^d)\) as t tends to 0. By density it follows that \(S_1(t)\) is a strongly continuous semigroup.
On the other hand, \(S_2(t)\) is the semigroup associated with the quadratic form
with domain \(D(a)=\{f\in L^2({\mathbb {R}}^d)\cap W_\mathrm{loc}^{1,2}({\mathbb {R}}^d): |Q^{1/2}\nabla f|, v^{1/2}f\in L^2({\mathbb {R}}^d)\}\). Note that \(a(f)\ge \min \{c_0,\mu _0\}\Vert f\Vert _{1,2}\) for every \(f\in D(a)\). Since by Nash’s inequality \(\Vert f\Vert _2^{2+4/d} \le C_1\Vert f\Vert _{1,2}^2\Vert f\Vert _1^{4/d}\) for some positive constant \(C_1\) and every \(f\in W^{1,2}({\mathbb {R}}^d)\cap L^1({\mathbb {R}}^d)\), we easily obtain that \(\Vert f\Vert _2^{2+4/d}\le K a(f)\Vert f\Vert _1^{4/d}\) for some constant \(K>0\) , and therefore \(S_1(t)\) is bounded from \(L^1({\mathbb {R}}^d)\) into \(L^2({\mathbb {R}}^d)\) (see [14, Theorem 2.4.6]). By observing that \({\mathcal {A}}_v\) is self-adjoint, the usual duality argument proves that \(S_1(t)\) is bounded from \(L^2({\mathbb {R}}^d)\) into \(L^\infty ({\mathbb {R}}^d)\) and, by applying the semigroup law, it follows that \(S_1(t)\) is bounded from \(L^1({\mathbb {R}}^d)\) into \(L^\infty ({\mathbb {R}}^d)\).
Next, we claim that
for every \({\varvec{f}}\in C_b({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\). Using the fact that \(S_1(t)\) is bounded from \(L^1({\mathbb {R}}^d)\) into \(L^\infty ({\mathbb {R}}^d)\) together with (4.6) it is immediate to check that \({\varvec{T}}_p(t)\) maps \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) into \(L^{\infty }({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {R}}^m)\) for every \(p\ge p_0\) and (4.5) follows in this case. Finally, applying Riesz-Thorin interpolation theorem, we conclude the proof.
So, let us prove the claim. We first consider the case \(p \in (1,2)\). A straightforward computation reveals that the function \(z_{\varepsilon ,p}=|{\varvec{u}}|_{\varepsilon }^p-S(\cdot )(|{\varvec{f}}|^2+\varepsilon )^{\frac{p}{2}}\), where we have set \({\varvec{u}}={\varvec{T}}_{\infty }(\cdot ){\varvec{f}}\), is a classical solution to the equation \(D_t z_{\varepsilon ,p}-{\mathcal {A}}_v z_{\varepsilon ,p}=\psi _{\varepsilon ,p}\) where
Using the hypotheses, the estimate \({{\mathfrak {q}}}(|{\varvec{u}}|^2)\le 4|{\varvec{u}}|_{\varepsilon }^2 \sum _{k=1}^m{{\mathfrak {q}}}(u_k)\) and Young’s inequality, we infer that
for every \(\sigma >0\). Choosing \(\sigma =p-1\) and using the condition \(p\kappa ^2 m-4(p-1)^2\le 0\), we conclude that \(D_tz_{\varepsilon ,p}-{\mathcal {A}}_vz_{\varepsilon ,p}\le \varepsilon v |{\varvec{u}}|_{\varepsilon }^{p-2}\), whence
for every \(t>0\) and \(x\in {\mathbb {R}}^d\), where we used the fact that, by the assumption \({\mathcal {A}}_vv\le M\) in \({\mathbb {R}}^d\) and [27, (proof of) Lemma 4.1.3], we can apply each operator S(t) to function v and \((S(t)v)(x)\le v(x)+Mt\) for every \(t\ge 0\) and \(x \in {\mathbb {R}}^d\). Letting \(\varepsilon \rightarrow 0\) in (4.7), the assertion follows in this case.
Finally, the case \(p\in (2,\infty )\) follows easily from estimate (4.3), with \({\varvec{u}}={\varvec{T}}_{\infty }(\cdot ){\varvec{f}}\), if we recall that S(t) admits an integral representation with a kernel \(p:(0,\infty )\times {\mathbb {R}}^d\times {\mathbb {R}}^d\rightarrow {{\mathbb {R}}}\) satisfying the condition \(\Vert p(t,x,\cdot )\Vert _{L^1({\mathbb {R}}^d)}\le 1\) for every \(t>0\) and \(x \in {\mathbb {R}}^d\) (see [27, Theorem 1.2.5]). Hence, by the Hölder’s inequality we conclude that \(|{\varvec{u}}(t,\cdot )|^p\le (S(t)|{\varvec{f}}|^2)^{\frac{p}{2}}\le S(t)|{\varvec{f}}|^p\) in \({\mathbb {R}}^d\) for every \(t>0\). \(\square\)
Remark 4.6
It is worth noticing that, if the assumptions of Proposition 4.4 are satisfied, with (3.1) replaced by (3.6), to be satisfied by every \(\kappa >0\), and \(\theta <1\), then the semigroup \({\varvec{T}}_p(t)\) is defined for every \(p>1\) (since, by Remark 3.4, the assumptions of Theorem 3.3 are satisfied by every \(p>1\)) and estimate (4.5) holds true for every \(p,q\in (1,\infty )\), with \(p<q\).
5 Examples
In this section we provide examples of classes of operators to which the results of this paper can be applied.
Example 5.1
Let \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\) be the operator defined in (1.1) with
for every \(x\in {\mathbb {R}}^d\), \(i,j=1,\ldots ,d\) and let \(V:{\mathbb {R}}^d\rightarrow {{\mathbb {R}}}^{m\times m}\) be a measurable function such that
with \(v(x):=e^{(1+|x|^2)^\beta }\) for \(x\in {\mathbb {R}}^d\). Here, \(\beta \in (0,\infty )\), \(\alpha \in [0,2]\), \(\gamma \in [0,\alpha /4]\) and \(A^i\) is a symmetric \(m\times m\) real-valued matrix for every \(i=1,\ldots , d\).
It is easy to check that, for every \(\varepsilon >0\), there exists a positive constant \(C_{\varepsilon }\) such that
Moreover the condition \(\alpha \in [0,2]\) ensures that \(\langle Q\nabla v,\nabla v\rangle \le Cv^2\log ^2v\) on \({\mathbb {R}}^d\) for some constant \(C>0\). Since \(|\nabla Q(y)|\le C_*(1+|y|^2)^{\frac{\alpha -1}{2}}\) for every \(y\in {\mathbb {R}}^d\) and \(\rho (x)=C_{**}(1+|x|^2)^{\frac{\alpha }{4}}e^{-\frac{1}{2}(1+|x|^2)^{\beta }}\) for every \(x\in {\mathbb {R}}^d\) and some positive constants \(C_*\) and \(C_{**}\), it follows that

An example of function V satisfying (5.1) for \(m=2\) is
for every measurable function \(\phi\) satisfying \(|\phi (x)|\le e^{(1+|x|^2)^\beta }\) for all \(x\in {\mathbb {R}}^d\).
Example 5.2
Let \(\varvec{{\mathcal {A}}}\) be the operator defined in Example 5.1 with a potential matrix V whose entries belong to \(C^\alpha _\mathrm{loc}({\mathbb {R}}^d)\) and satisfy (5.1). Assuming further that \(A_0\le \sqrt{2m^{-1}}\) if \(p \ge 2\) and \(pA_0^2m-4(p-1)^2\le 0\) if \(p \in (1,2)\), all the assumptions in Hypotheses 4.1 are satisfied. Hypothesis 4.1(iii) is satisfied, for instance, by the function \(\varphi :{\mathbb {R}}^d\rightarrow {{\mathbb {R}}}\), defined by \(\varphi (x)=1+|x|^2\) for every \(x \in {\mathbb {R}}^d\). Indeed, since
diverges to \(-\infty\) as \(|x|\rightarrow \infty\), clearly we can find a positive constant \(\lambda\) such that \({\mathcal {A}}_v \varphi \le \lambda \varphi\). Further,
for every \(x \in {\mathbb {R}}^d\). Since \(\psi (x)\) diverges to \(-\infty\) as \(|x|\rightarrow \infty\), the condition \({\mathcal {A}}_v v\le M\) in \({\mathbb {R}}^d\) is satisfied too. Thus, Proposition 4.4 can be applied to deduce that \({\varvec{T}}_p(t){\varvec{f}}={\varvec{T}}_{\infty }(t){\varvec{f}}\) for every \({\varvec{f}}\in L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {C}}^m)\cap C_b({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {C}}^m)\).
Suppose that \((2\gamma +\beta )|\lambda | c_0<1\) (see Example 5.1) and \(\gamma <\alpha /4\). Then the semigroup \({\varvec{T}}_p(t)\) exists for every \(p\in (1,\infty )\) and all the semigroups are consistent.
Finally, Remark 4.6 infers that \({\varvec{T}}(t)\) maps \(L^p({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {C}}^m)\) into \(L^q({\mathbb {R}}^d;{\mathbb {C}}^m)\) for every \(t>0\) and \(1< p\le q\le \infty\) and estimate (4.5) holds true.

1.3 On inequality (3.28)
In this subsection, we prove in details that we can choose the parameters \(\varepsilon _i\) (\(i=0,\ldots ,3\)) in such a way that the first three terms in the right-hand side of (3.28) are all nonpositive. Equivalently, we just need to prove that these parameters can be fixed to guarantee that \(f_1(\varepsilon _1,\varepsilon _3)>0\), \(1-\varepsilon _1\kappa (p-2)p^{-1}\ge 0\) and \(p-\kappa m\varepsilon _3>0\). The better choice of \(\varepsilon _1\) is \(\varepsilon _1=p[\kappa (p-2)]^{-1}\). Replacing this value in \(f_1\), we get a new function \({{\widetilde{f}}}_1\), which is continuous and increasing in the domain \((0,p(\kappa m)^{-1})\). Therefore its supremum in the interval \((0,p(\kappa m)^{-1})\) is the limit at \(p(\kappa m)^{-1}\), which is \(1-\frac{\theta }{p}-\frac{\kappa ^2m(p-2)}{4p^2}(m+p-2)\), and it is positive due to condition (3.3).
1.4 On inequality (3.29)
Here, we prove in details that the free parameters in (3.29) can be chosen to guarantee that the first two terms in the right-hand side of (3.29) are all nonpositive. Of course, we just need to show that we can choose the positive parameters \(\varepsilon _1\) and \(\varepsilon _3\) in such a way that \(f_2(\varepsilon _1,\varepsilon _3)\) and \(g_1 (\varepsilon _1,\varepsilon _3)\) are both nonnegative.
