Abstract

Spot welding is an effective method of joining metal sheets. This method is extensively applied by automotive and similar industries. The quality of spot welding depends on the physical characteristics to a large extent. Therefore, determining the proper methods to ensure the physical characteristics is of utmost importance. This study used ultrasonic nondestructive testing to assess the physical characteristics of spot welding and its quality. The method employs different intensities of ultrasonic wave energy travelling through a test object, which is influenced by structural changes caused by heating during the welding process. As a result, it is possible to estimate such physical characteristics of welding as microhardness of the spot welding through attenuation coefficient of ultrasonic testing. In addition, the experimental results indicate the relationship between microhardness value and spot welding quality.
