Uncommon Ulcers of the Extremities

Abstract

Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common type of autoimmune arthritis characterised by pain, swelling, and tenderness of peripheral joints in a symmetrical pattern. It is also characterised by prominent extra-articular manifestations. These include rheumatoid nodules, pulmonary involvement, vasculitis, and systemic effects. Ulcers of the extremities have been reported in around 10% cases of rheumatoid arthritis, but in contrast, rheumatoid arthritis is a rare cause of ulcers of the extremities. When one thinks of rheumatoid limb ulcers, the general idea that comes to mind is of cutaneous ulcers related to rheumatoid vasculitis. However, there may be other aetiologies of limb ulcers in rheumatoid arthritis, with ulcers due to imbalances in foot pressure resulting from deformities being some of the common ones.
