Abstract

The concept of sustainability revolves around concerted efforts by organisations to attain triple bottom line, i.e. people, profit and planet. In the last fifty years, sustainability has pervaded politics, governance, public policy, international relations and above all, the management of businesses and enterprises across the globe. Thus, the notion of sustainability has also transformed HR systems and practices over time. This study examines how sustainable HR systems have evolved and influenced organisational outcomes by creating high-performance work culture to meet and exceed the expectations of internal and external stakeholders without compromising profitability. Based on an integrative review of over 40 researches, the present study tries to find out the roadblocks in adopting sustainable HR systems, how sustainable HR can become part of mainstream management systems and what the leaders are doing about it. The study also presents a holistic view of the prospects of sustainable HR in the emerging scenario.
